Last week, I wrote about my own experience of being a new mother during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. This week kicks off my “Honoring Parenthood in Pandemic” feature. My first guest is a mother of two and a photographer in Phoenix, Arizona. Janee Page, of Page Photography, gave birth to her son in April of 2020, while the entire United States was officially shut down.
Read on to hear what Janee has to share about her experience and the great advice she leaves us with!
What was your experience navigating through the fourth trimester during the COVID 2019 pandemic? Was there anything different from bringing home your previous child(ren)?
Anyone who knows me knows I was never a “helicopter parent” with my daughter, who is now 3 years old. She went everywhere and anywhere with us since the day she was born even though she was born during the typical flu season.
With my new baby I definitely have taken a more cautious approach to things and find myself questioning every decision I make.
Did I remind them to wash their hands? Did I ask if they have been sick/around anyone who has been? Because I was so lenient with my first baby having one during COVID has caused me a lot of anxiety. With her it was like babies get sick & people get sick – I can’t keep her in a bubble. With him it has been the opposite.
What ways have you found to cope with being a new mom and/or dealing with the isolation and fear that may come with raising a newborn in a pandemic situation?
I have to keep reminding myself all I can do is be cautious and love my kids. I can’t focus on everything that “could” happen or keep feeling guilty over the what ifs. As mothers all we want to do is keep our kids safe and healthy. I have to remind myself that just because we are in a pandemic doesn’t mean I’m all of a sudden doing it wrong.
Tell me about your favorite part of motherhood and what you most look forward to.
My favorite part of motherhood is just watching them grow. I love watching them learn new things and develop a personality.
What advice or words of wisdom you would like to share with other mothers?
Don’t be so hard on yourself and enjoy them while you can. Time goes by so fast and you’ll start to find yourself trying to remember when the last time they did certain things was. Always remember you’re not alone. Don’t be afraid to share your story as a mother. No matter how crazy it might be don’t worry about being judged. You never know when you will find a mom out there with a similar story that needs to know they aren’t alone.
Parenthood in a Pandemic can be tough!
As you see, Janee changed her whole outlook on risk management due to the prevalence of COVID-19. It can certainly be tough to add in the anxiety of keeping your child safe from a bug we are learning about each and everyday!
As the quarantine has lifted and families begin adjusting to the ‘new normal’, Janee has begun making her photography business a priority, which is absolutely amazing!
